ABSTRACT

RINI, LEKSITO.  A4C008013.  Improving Students’ Reading Competence Using Inquiry-Based Strategies: A Classroom Action Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Brebes 2010-2011.  Thesis: Applied Linguistics in English, Postgraduate Program of Diponegoro University Semarang. 2011.

This research is aimed to find out whether the students involve and respond the reading texts when the teacher uses inquiry-based strategies and whether the use of inquiry-based strategies improves the tenth graders’ reading competence at SMA Negeri 1 Brebes in academic year 2010/2011.

The method used to solve the problem was a classroom action research employed in three cycles.  There were four steps in every cycle, namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting.  Inquiry-based strategies were used to improve the students’ reading competence.  The strategies consisted of inquiry-based teaching strategy for teachers and inquiry-based learning strategy for students.  The data collecting and analysis techniques were qualitative (observation, questionnaire, interview, and constant comparative method) and quantitative (descriptive statistics).

Before conducting the research, the students’ reading competence problems had to be identified based on the researcher’s observation during classroom activities.  The problems were (1) having limited number of vocabulary, (2) possessing less willingness to read, (3) not getting used to reading, (4) being confused to understand the content of the texts, and (5) having difficulty to respond questions based on what stated in the text.  An English pre-test on recount was enrolled at seven classes of tenth grade in the month of July 2010.  The result was that the students of Class X-1 with 13 male and 22 female students performed only 12 of 35 students or 32.43% passed the passing grade or KKM 70 with the score average of 61.63.  Compared with other classes, the result was the least.  The reading competence dealt with the indicators to identify and to respond rhetoric steps of every text/genre.  The research was conducted from July to November 2010 or during Semester One.  At the end, the research showed that the students were willing to involve and to respond the reading materials.  They became more active to explore and elaborate the content of the texts using inquiry-based strategies.  As a consequence, the average of Test 1 on recount in Cycle One was 68.43; Test 2 on narrative in Cycle Two was 69.94; and Test 3 on procedure in Cycle Three was 79.54.  The result proves that the students’ reading competence get improved after the researcher used inquiry-based strategies.

The research showed that the improvement is not only for the students’ reading competence but also their behaviour to involve and to respond the text during the class.  Therefore, this research is recommended as reference for those who have involved in teaching learning activities, such as: teachers, students, and future researchers.

Maknanya adalah Global Lingua Brebes siap mengantarkan warga belajar mampu bersaing di era globalisasi, terutama dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris.

MISI : 
1.  Menumbuhkan apresiasi peserta didik terhadap Bahasa Inggris.
2.  Mengembangkan kompetensi Bahasa Inggris peserta didik untuk tujuan komunikasi aktif dan untuk kesiapan menghadapi era global.
3.  Memasyarakatkan Bahasa Inggris, khususnya di Brebes.
4.  Meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan nasional dan pencerdasan bangsa khususnya Bahasa Inggris.

TUJUAN :
1.  Membantu meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. 
2.  Meningkatkan kualitas berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris.
3.  Berupaya menciptakan lapangan pekerjaan khususnya di lingkungan Kecamatan Brebes dengan merekrut staf karyawan dan pendidik yang berasal dari Brebes dan sekitarnya.

RIDIA PLAY GROUP BREBES

 

RIDIA PLAY GROUP BREBES was established on July 31st, 2007.  There are two classes, namely:

1. Class A is for 2 and 3 year-old students.  The students learn every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 08.00 a.m to 10.00 a.m.
2. Class B is for 3 and 4 year-old students.  The students learn every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 08.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m.

The class consists of 15-16 students.

The teachers are:

 The teachers are fully dedicated to their profession.  They concern with any achievement and progress the students are able to perform during the teaching-learning activities.

 She had  learned English at Global Lingua Brebes since she was at the 5th grade of elementary school until she graduated from SMP Negeri 2 Brebes with flying colors.  She is competent & competitive on many English contests.

She became the second winner (silver medal) of National Biology Olympiad 2009 for SMP / Junior High School students held by the Ministry of National Education based in Jakarta.

She got the highest score for SMP National Exam all of Brebes Regency in academic year 2009/2010.  Because of her remarkable achievement, she recently continues her study at Semesta International Boarding School in Semarang with full scholarship.

     Global Lingua Brebes menawarkan program-program pilihan berdasarkan pada kebutuhan peserta (Needs Analysis).  Di setiap program akan terbagi lagi menjadi beberapa level di mana penentuan level berdasarkan hasil Placement Test yang dilakukan sebelum siswa mengikuti pembelajaran di Global Lingua Brebes.  Hal tersebut dilakukan agar instruktur yang menyampaikan pembelajaran kepada peserta didik.
